Diagnostic medical sonography is a two-year AAS degree program preparing students for the exciting and ever changing health care field. Diagnostic medical sonographers use high frequency sound waves to produce anatomical images for diagnostic purposes. The program coordinates on-campus didactic and laboratory classes with clinical experiences at area hospitals. Through clinical assignments students have opportunities to work with the most modern and specialized equipment available alongside knowledgeable staff with a wealth of experience in imaging. Graduates can gain employment in large hospitals, suburban outpatient clinic, or a rural physician's office. Specialization in dozens of specialty areas ranging from obstetrics, to cardiovascular, to orthopedics exist for sonography students upon graduation. A career in diagnostic medical sonography can open the door to a variety of employment opportunities and is only limited by the student’s desire to learn and to grow.

Professional Outlook

4,100 diagnostic medical sonographers are currently employed in NYS with the prospects of an additional 1,650 positions by 2020.

Overall employment of medical sonographers and cardiovascular technologists and technicians is projected to grow 14 percent from 2020 to 2030, faster than the average for all occupations.

About 12,000 openings for medical sonographers and cardiovascular technologists and technicians are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.

The 2021 median annual pay for medical sonographers and cardiovascular technologists and technicians was $75,380.

Pioneer Quotes

"I love that this is the only school that's close, that offers a degree in two years. It has small classes so there is more one-on-one time. Plus, the clinical is included in the two years so no extra time is needed. All of the teachers are super helpful, and willing to help whenever needed. This program is a great opportunity in such a small area, especially for a growing field in health care." -Alyssa Hammond, '17
