What is Gender Inclusive Housing? (GIH)
Gender Inclusive Housing is a housing option that allows individuals who are not the same gender, who may identify outside of the gender binary (male or female), who may be questioning aspects of their sexuality/gender or who may be in the process (or completed) a gender transition to live in an environment that is safe and supportive.
Who can live in Gender Inclusive Housing?
This living space is open to the entire campus community, is requested through an application process and selected on a yearly basis by a committee dedicated to the oversight of that community. While the community is open to all the committee does its best to prevent cohabitation and to preserve the spirit of the community as one dedicated to providing a safe space for the LGBTQ community and their allies.
Where is Gender Inclusive Housing located?
Gender Inclusive Housing is located in MacKenzie East G-Tower, which is a square corridor residence hall where the residents will live on the floor with other students who are approved to live in the Gender Inclusive Housing area. They will share a common lounge where the residence hall staff and The Office of Equity, Inclusion and Title IX will work together to provide programming for.
What is the application process to live in Gender Inclusive Housing?
To live in Gender Inclusive Housing you may fill out the online application by logging into your my.alfredstate.edu, select the "Housing" icon. Under forms fill out the Gender Inclusive Housing Application. Once received the members of the GIH committee, comprised of members from Residential Services, Health and Wellness and the Center for Equity, Inclusion and Title IX review the application to determine whether the individual(s) will be a good fit in the community and contacts the applicants are then notified by a member of that team.
Who will know I am living in Gender Inclusive Housing (if I don’t want them to?)
While we prefer that students fill out their own housing and roommate survey, we recognize that sometimes parents/guardians can also be the ones who complete the housing survey. . We will contact you via email to let you know if you were accepted to live in GIH and when you receive your room assignment Gender Inclusive Housing will not be listed on your assignment.

Gender Inclusive Housing Community Contract
Gender inclusive housing is an inclusive and voluntary environment where students can live in the same room with other students regardless of sex, gender, and sexual orientation. This housing option is available to students, as space is available, who would like to grow as individuals, student leaders, and active citizens in society.
Community Contract Terms: As part of the Gender Inclusive Housing community, I agree:
- To abide by all regulations as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct, License for Residency, and to respect the purpose of the Gender Inclusive Housing initiative.
- To contribute positively to the community by offering support and encouragement.
- To respect the motives for all community members in choosing this living option.
- To use inclusive and socially just language within and outside of the living space.
- To practice habits that contribute to safe community living.
- To embrace and learn from experiences different than my own.
- To actively participate in community events including, but not limited to, floor meetings, socials, and building wide events.
- To support social justice and equity/inclusive initiatives launched from within the community.
- To educate my guests about the community expectations and values.
Community Expectations
The success of this community and fulfillment of its mission are dependent upon full participation of all members. Residents who violate these agreements will meet with senior staff to evaluate the student’s impact on the community. In addition, residents will be required to attend and participate in area meetings at the beginning of each term to develop and refine a community agreement. Violations may result in expulsion from the community and movement to a different area.
