Appeal Process

Students who wish to appeal a credit evaluation decision may do so after they have been accepted to the college and by following the credit appeal process below. For additional information regarding the evaluation and awarding of transfer credit, please feel free to contact us.

Transfer Credit Appeal ProcessA student with transfer credit must submit an official academic transcript directly from the Record's Office of the granting institution to the Record's Office at Alfred State.

The Record's Office, after consulting with involved academic departments (if needed), and applying all appropriate academic regulations, will complete and process a transfer credit evaluation.

The Record's Office notifies the student of accepted transfer credit and provides the student a copy of the appeal process and the website from which an appeal application can be obtained. Transfer credit results are also communicated to the student's academic department chair and advisor.

A student wishing to challenge course credits not transferred must complete the transfer credit appeal form (pdf) and submit it to their academic department chair for reconsideration. The department chair gives the student a signed and dated copy of the appeal form, thus acknowledging receipt of the appeal and establishing day one of the review process.

Within five days of receipt of the appeal, the department chair will notify the student of the results of their review. Any changes will be communicated to the Record's Office for official processing.

A student dissatisfied with the results of the appeal at the department level may submit their appeal form and department notification to their academic dean for a final campus review. The dean provides dated acknowledgment of receipt of the appeal to the student.

Within five days of receipt of the appeal, the dean will notify the student of the results of their review. Any changes will be communicated to the Record's Office for official processing.

If you still do not agree with your campus’ decision, or you have not received a response in 15 business days, you may appeal to the SUNY System Provost. You can submit the appeal by filling out student appeal form and sending it along with requested material via email to: TransferCredit@sysadm.suny.edu, or send via certified mail to:

Dr. Tod Laursen
Senior Vice Chancellor and Provost
SUNY System Administration
One University Plaza
Albany, NY 12246

The SUNY Provost will respond to your appeal within five business days from receipt of the completed appeal application. If the decision finds merit to change the course to meet a major requirement, the receiving institution will be notified to take appropriate action.

If you have questions on this process, please email studentmobility@suny.edu.
